There's the quilt I hung the morning Duncan came to visit me for the first time! I was in a mad rush to have everything speak who I was, tell a story or reflect my personality. He had said, "I want to get to know you better!" I thought, I should at least make a effort to turn my earlier barren apartment into a home that held my style, fanciful collections or just all around weirdest.
I had the carpet man working on shampooing the work of my new puppy, Aristotle, the puppy was confined behind a baby gate barking to get the carpet man's attention and I was atop my son's antique record player hammering tacks into the precious flea market find on the wall. Rushing to get the fabric up, checking the time...God I'm going to be late then I step down without looking! I had stepped onto an unstable ottoman which immediately twisted over and so did I. I did a complete somersault hitting the glass coffee table with my foot and landing on my head and neck. Crackkkkkk kk like the therapist, I heard and felt my neck react. I must have blacked out for a second or two...scrambled to my knees in time to face the carpet guy. "Did something happen," he said. "Yes, I fell," I replied quickly then limping into the bedroom, claiming to be fine. I swear, my eyes were still rolling around like a badly drawn cartoon skit!
Now, I'm really going to be late picking Duncan up from the train station. God, not the impression I wanted to give. I limped down three flights of stairs, twitching with each step and I drive a clutch. Shazbott, it hurts...got to get there!
Parking the car across from the station, checking my hair, makeup and then....thought, (will he remember what I look like, will I be able to pick him out)....go...just hobble and go!
What a pair we were? All smiles, not knowing whether to kiss or hug or both and then I had the perfect conversation started..."Hey Look Duncan, I broke my toe!"
