Happy Birthday Brother David

Tomorrow will be your birthday, dear brother
another year that you've been away
it frightens me to realize that I think of you so rarely
except on those occasions when you return in my life as a memory

not so long ago, you and I were peat and repeat, Jack & Jill, Roy & Dale
two siblings closer than most, bound by birth and dramatics
the hot head & the compromised, the dreamer & the daredevil but always passionate and emotional about life

you never thought before you acted, I the ever worrywart who fretted consequences for each minor sin
together and united we made an formidable foe to all who trespassed
then again at odds with who should be in control, we stubbornly locked horns

childhood explorers and doers of minor misdeeds we embraced our young days
who was your Jane to you, Tarzan and who fought at your side against the villains?
a black eye and split lip was my badge for getting the western flyer returned
we could fight, squabble and bicker but no one was allowed to insult the family

I have physical signs that return you to me, the scars from jumping off the house
can't forget taring that old boat that left marks on my forearms
the perfect circle on my forehead from our William Tell adventure
and a lovely half-moon blemish from a motor bike mishap

Huckleberry Fin, you led, I followed or warned and went anyway
I followed to be apart of your energy, your passion for fun and daring
Together as twins of opposite personalities & strengths we made a team
And now, now that you have gone ahead of me, I take up your banner !
